Wool and cashmere varieties may shield us from the cold, but it's against our nature to restrict scarves to winter-weather wear. "Our fundamental motive for getting dressed is to decorate ourselves, not to have warmth or protection," says Jean Druesedow, director of the Kent State University Museum in Ohio.
